Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- London and the eastern side of the U.K. were hit by the heaviest snowstorm in more than a decade, with at least 15 centimeters (6 inches) covering much of the area, including the capital, by 4.30 a.m. local time.

The government-run meteorological service issued severe weather warnings for London and the southeast, and Chris Almond, a forecaster at the Met Office, said it was the heaviest snowfall since February 1991.

Hundreds of snow ploughs and gritters were working to clear roads as much of the UK was blanketed in snow - and forecasters warned of further heavy falls in the next 48 hours.

London Transport suspended its bus services because of dangerous conditions on the roads, while trains linking the capital with the south coast were also delayed or cancelled as snow drifted onto the tracks.
