Microsoftは、コンシューマ向けのウイルス対策ソフト事業を立ち上げて2年になるが、すでに見切りをつけたようだ。今後、同社はLive OneCareに代わり、Windowsユーザー向けの新たな無料セキュリティ・ソフト（開発コード名「Morro」）を提供する予定だという。

同社は、公式ブログにおいて「世界中の何百万というユーザーに、新たなセキュリティ・ソリューションを提供する必要がある。新事業に注力するため、Windows Live OneCareサービスは終了することになった」と記している。
米国Microsoftは11月18日、ウイルス対策ソフト「Windows Live OneCare」の店頭販売を2009年6月30日を持って終了することを発表した。

Morroは、ウイルス対策ソフトを購入したことのないユーザーをターゲットにしており、Live OneCareに比べて必要なシステム・リソースの負担が少ないという。ウイルスやトロイの木馬、スパイウェアなどからPCを保護する機能を提供するが、Live OneCareのようなシステム管理やバックアップ機能は付属しない。
Microsoftによると、Live OneCareのサブスクリプションを購入したユーザーに対するサポートは有効期限内は継続するという。Morroは、現在Live OneCareが販売されている地域なら確実に入手可能だ。

これに伴い、現在提供している「Windows Live OneCare」サービスは、2009年6月30日で販売を終了する。なお、同サービスの利用者は、サブスクリプション期間が終わるまで利用し続けることができる。

「Morro」では、核となるマルウェア対策機能のみが提供され、Windows Live OneCareで提供していたパフォーマンス向上ツールやデフラグ、バックアップ復元ツールなどの機能は含まれない。
機能としては、ウイルス、スパイウェア、ルートキット、トロイの木馬からシステムを保護することを目的とする。特に、帯域幅の狭い低速回線、非力なPCが使用される場合を想定し、小さなフットプリントと、少ないコンピューティングリソースで動作するように設計される。マルウェア対策エンジンには、Microsoftがすでにセキュリティ製品に採用しているものと同じエンジンが利用される。
